For the residents, and especially the resident directors out there:
How are officer/leadership positions viewed when looking at residency applicants? Depending on the position you hold, it can add quite a bit of stress/work to your school life. I know that leadership can be it's own reward within an institution. However, assuming you can balance your work so that your scores don't suffer, is there a benefit for landing a residency?

Clarification: I've searched on the forums, but haven't seen any threads from the Podiatry section. I also have heard the school/student perspective, I'm really looking for the thoughts of non-students.

It doesn't mean much imho. You need to be an intelligent, well rounded, hard working, ethical person who interviews well, and you should have no problems scoring a great residency. An average applicant won't become an above average applicant simply because they were an officer in a student club.

If you wow the attendings and the director at a program when you extern/visit and have the stats and skills to make it in their program, they probably won't even notice what type of activities you do necessarily.

I think I mentioned this in another post, but I'm an avid guitar player and got to play at one of the school's talent shows. This came up in my residency interviews more than anything else social/extracurricular!
