1. I already searched this forum and found 1 post months ago.

2. Anyone have any information on this program? Satisfaction? Teaching? Residents?

I am considering rotating through for a month and maybe applying for residency. Has anyone been there in the last 6 months to 1 year? Thanks in advance.

I have a good friend that is a resident there. As of a couple of months ago, they got a whole new group. So things are looking up. It was pretty miserable before that though. You still read a crapload more cases than your ave rads residency.

You are in the bronx at a level 1 center, expect to get your ass kicked - hard (work wise).

I was looking forward to it to be honest... I like the idea of an underserved level 1 trauma center. I will be headed there in the middle of next year to see what to expect. Any pointers or tips? Any reading recommendations?

I appreciate your post and look forward to meeting their residents.

Best Regards,

I hope you don't eat your words. 😉

I think at this point, eatting my words would mean not working in the field I love. I would be truly thrilled to have the chance to practice radiology -- if that means the Bronx for 5 years, I can think of things that are worse.

I would still love any more solid information about this program. I am sure some of these Radio GURUs can tell me a thing or two about the program. Experiences they had with interviewing there? Being an intern there?

Anyone?

Man everyone seems to bash the area with regards to Barnabus. I guess I have the only realistic expectation about going there and others must have assumed it was going to be a resort or something along those lines.

I currently rotate out of far rockaway NY near Long Island.... I would be willing to say its about as bad as it would be in the Bronx. I used to live in the Bronx so I know what I am in for....

Does anyone have anything with regards to REAL information on this program?

ps - I will bring my kevlar, mace, etc with me... thanks for the concern.

Is there a particular reason why you want to go there? Can you choose somewhere else where to go?

The area shouldn't be that bad. If you've lived there it'll be fine.

I am looking at St. Barnabus because it is the sole Osteopathic Radiology Residency in the Northeast within range of living with my wife. Being from NY is also another reason I am looking at the program.

I am looking at other allopathic programs as well, but wanted to learn more about this one. Primary reason being I have seen so little written about it, to be honest.

dont compare st. barnabas to peninsula. Peninsula is a piece of cake compared to barnabus. The patient population is probably the worst in the country, highest rate of hiv, alcoholism, and drug abuse. Your internship year will be hell, 3 months of surgery as a radiology resident. Your calls will be worse than any other program in the hospital. You will get paged every 10 minutes for 27 hrs straight. Although people say it's improving there are still too few attendings on staff. If you could get an md spot dont think twice, if not then come to st. barnabas. The only good thing about the hospital is that it has a radiology residency, and any radiology program is probably better than most other residencies...

I mean I read your post .... do you speak from being a Resident/Intern or you shooting from the hip like 99% of the people on this board?

I used to live by Barnabas -- I am not too worried about the hours etc. Nor am I concerned about the HIV, alcoholism, Hep, etc. Those factors all contribute to great pathology. Where else in the US will you see people in such disarray?

I know the drill and the torture I may have to endure to in the long run get what I want in medicine; that being Radiology. If 27 hrs days discouraged me ... I believe the 1-5% apps:match rate that seems harder and harder every year would have scared me off long ago.

Regardless, I appreciate your info, but would still love to hear from someone in that hospital.

As the previous posted said, your internship is hell. Not only do you see a ****load of patients, but you literally DO EVERYTHING. By everything, I mean everything from H&P, to drawing the blood to fricken running the blood to the lab. I kid you not. It is MUCH cheaper to higher an intern than a nurse or a tech for that matter. Kiss sleep goodbye.

Residency call is hellacious from what I've been told. You can read anywhere from 60-100 CTs a night, which as a resident, is pretty inhuman. This is on-top of a ****load of plain films. Did I mention you have to scan all the US studies yourself? Expect to want to commit suicide each postcall.

Later years include the usual gambit of rotations. I have a feeling they focus more on bread-and-butter stuff like CT and plain films, versus more MR. I could be wrong.

All my knowledge is second hand of course since I don't go there. I do, however, have a good friend there. Also as stated previously, there is a NEW rad group in charge this year, so things are changing - probably for the better as I doubt it is possible to be worst.

In the end you get to be a radiologist and thats the important part. Residents there do well on their boards and match nice fellowships. If you have the mentality that you will be ****ted on a lot, then you'll be fine.
