Hello, I am considering radiology as a career and had a few questions regarding the various subspecialties.

First off, is there a source that provides a thorough description of what the various subspecialties entail? I have looked a bit online and can't seem to find a singular source of reasonably detailed info.

Secondly(although this sort of ties into the first q), does anyone know which subspecialties typically offer the most consistent patient contact and procedures? Excluding the obvious (IR)? I definitely don't want continuity of care with patients, or even to see patients all day. However, I enjoy people, brief patient interactions and focused procedures. I feel it would be nice to have a number of punctuated, daily procedures and moments of patient interactions to break up the periods of pure image interpretation/diagnostics.

thanks

Mammography/womens imaging.

You will do plenty of small procedures (localizations, stereotactic and US guided biopsies). Also, depending on the practice setting, it involves a fair amount of counseling patients sent to you for workup about the imaging results. (in an integrated breast center, a woman will be sent for example by her PCP for a palpable abnormality. On the same day, you might do a mammogram, an ultrasound and an ultrasound guided biopsy or FNA with on-site pathology. YOU are the person guiding the workup and referring her either back to the PCP with reassurance or on to the surgeon for biopsy or treatment)

Mammo is not everyones thing, but if you don't mind talking to patients and if you are able to handle the medicolegal climate, it can be a very fulfilling subspecialty.
