We hear a lot about the big name Post-Bacc programs in NY, such as Columbia and Cuny Hunter, but I have heard little of Suny Stony Brook. Are there any people out there that could share their experience at Stony Brook? Any insight would be very helpful. Thank you.

I considered StonyBrook but it was just too far from where I live. From what I have heard, StonyBrook is a great school for sciences. They do not have an actual post bacc program though, which can limit you in financial aid (if you need it ) and may cause problems registering for classes. Since you may be considered a non matriculant.

I am almost positive that Stony doesnt have a post bacc program? Does anyone know for sure?

The other thing that I have heard is, that lectures are big, I mean 90 people or more and it may be difficult to have the professors attention especially when you need a LOR. Hope I helped, otherwise, that school rocks and I would have loved to go there, but its a good 45 minutes from where I live, and seeing that I spend most of my time at school, I couldnt even imagine having gone there.

Jules,

Thanks for the info. I wish the information on their post-baccalaureate site shared a little bit more about the program and its benefits. I guess I will need to make an appointment to see someone in their Pre-Health Advisement department. Thanks again for your help.

I was an undergrad at Stony Brook for three years and I'm doing the post-bacc there right now(started this spring semester). The school is good in the sciences. For comparison, I'd say it's better than the CUNY's (Hunter and CCNY) for the same tuition. You shouldn't have problem getting loans from banks.

The post-bacc program is informal, but you won't have trouble getting into classes because they are always avialable(I'd say with 99% confidence 🙂 ), even though you can only register a week after the undergrads register first. If you start in the summer, you can finish the program in 12 months.

I think the only advantage you get from formal post-baccs is that they have linkages. However, Stony Brook does have linkage to its own med school. But be warned that they RARELY allow you to apply through the linkage program unless you have excelent grades(overall GPA) and scores. Other than that, you take the same classes as in any post-bacc program, and just like the formal post-baccs, the health sciences committee will write you a recommendation for med school.

Good luck!

Mikem,

Can I ask you a few questions? How many science classes does one need to have before the committee will write a letter of recommendation? In addition, I see that they require all students to take a math placement exam. I took through Calc. 1 during my college years and would definitely prefer not to take it again. Is the placement exam frequently waived for students who have taken math courses through Calculus? Finally, I completed General Chemistry 1 back in '98 and I plan on taking the lecture over again to referesh my memory before jumping into General Chemistry 2. I'd prefer not to take the lab over for chem 1 and some schools allow this. Do you know if Stony Brook requires lectures to be taken with labs (if the lab has already been taken and passed with a satisfactory grade)? Sorry for the thousand questions but I'm trying to make my decision and registration time is soon approaching for both Hunter and Stony Brook for non-matriculants.

I'm not sure how many credits or classes you need to complete before they write you the letter. I only remember one condition being that you take most of your prereqs at the school. However, you probably won't need the letter until you're in your final semester or after your final semester, so that shouldn't be a problem.

General chemistry 1 and 2(and I think organic chem also) are the only classes that you can take separately -- so yes, you can take chemistry without taking the labs at Stony Brook. Labs are corequisites for bio and physics classes.

Regarding the placement exams, I think only new undergraduate students take them. I don't see why they'll require you to take it. It was not required at Stony Brook.

Thanks for the info, mikem.

Hey there people:
😳
I am currently doing a postbacc at SUNY SB, and I can say that I am learning tons. Please note that I turned down Columbia to come here. Why? I didnt have the Many extra thousands to spare and forgo the option to go live in The city again, just for more undergrad work. If I get into Columbia for med school that might be a little different.

Anyway, if you need your hand held, consider other programs seriously. 😱 This is for the dedicated self starter, know what you want and how do get it, person. Sure the classes are big, and mostly day time, but are you a hard worker? See my previous postings in this forum by searching my username, and GOOD LUCK! 👍

I just realized that I said "It(placement exam) was required at Stony Brook." I meant to say it WAS NOT required. Sorry if you had already made your decision to go to Hunter based on that sentence. 😀
