Can someone please explain : Forefoot Supinatus and Forefoot Valgus in terms of the joints and the motion.

FF supinatus is esentially the same as FF varus... first met much higher than 5th when STJ is in neutral and you are looking "down" the foot (toes pointing at you). FF varus is usually compensation for flatfoot (which basically = STJ pronation/ STJ valgus).

FF valgus is the opposite: 5th met higher than first met head when STJ is in neutral. This is usually compensation for a high arch (cavovarus) foot.


Rearfoot varus/valgus is based on STJ; forefoot varus/valgus are more based on TN and CC joints. Try reading Valmassy text... lots of pics, and required text if you go to Barry 😉. Biomechanics is fairly hard for everyone during 2nd year, but it will make more sense when you start learning surgery... esp flatfoot procedures.

Also my understanding. We just had a lecture that included this topic. We are taught that "west coast" casts out supinatus, while "east side" trained practitioners don't. East vs. West has left the realm of hip hop and infiltrated podiatry!
