Yet people still run des on 10 L and open fifteen syringes per case? I do my best to minimize plastic use, decrease volatile use but the wasteful practices taught in academia are just too insane. Drawing up "emergency meds" like you can't have it drawn up and diluted in five seconds. Having four different tubes opened "just in case". Wearing a new mask for "each encounter". Ridiculously wasteful and now we are starting to see the consequences for it.

I have gotten more grief in private practice that I ever got in academia for mask nonsense.
Agree, I trained at a large academic hospital and could at least where my own damn scrub hat. The good ole days

We all work and live under the illusion that our infrastructure is secure. I think we are increasingly finding out how vulnerable we are to the forces of nature.

prolly more vulnerable to device addiction and work ethic deficit...sounds cliché but the infrastructure is only as good as the folks that maintain it. Cultural decay is a thing.

While storms like these will almost certainly become more common, I think the power failures were probably avoidable with better investment. In general it doesn't make sense to winterize plants in Texas, but hopefully they learn from this and adjust for the future.

One other thought: Texas has seen incredible growth, in large part due to people from states like mine (high tax, old industrial east) moving for low regulation, low taxes, and a 'lone star' attitude. Should it really be a surprise that a government like that isn't built for adaptability?

Yes. Insurance and reliability costs money.

They won't. Because this happened in 2011 and 2008 and on and on and it still happened again. Now I'm reading news articles about how they don't have any potable water, can't flush the toilets, need to light candles at night and are dying from carbon monoxide from trying to keep warm. I feel like I'm reading about a disaster in Haiti. And you see our leaders like Ted Cruz chillin in Cancun while people suffer.

The lawsuits are coming! The lawsuits are coming!! Screw these greedy ass power companies!!! Yeah, empty buildings were lit like Christmas trees when regular people had no power and died. And people like Jerry Jones jacked up the prices for people w no power.
Apparently most states aren’t deregulated like Texas when it comes to energy. Apparently Abbott is having emergency meetings to stop people from getting their lights and water cut off due to exorbitant prices in the 10K plus range.

Screw these power companies and their old leaders and old money who take advantage of people.

Indeed there are rumors fed aid money (which should be going in to building/infrastructure damage) is going to be used to pay these insane bills which is irony of the highest order.

And arguing against winterization due to rarity is devaluing human life to a degree we don't accept in the usa. It would be like arguing against installing air bags because of the low probability of having a car accident or carrying an epi pen when you have severe anaphylaxis to peanuts.

Choco, your talk sounds an awful lot like a slippery slope to socialism. Please don't punish the noble job creators in the utility industry simply because irresponsible people didn't put 10k away for their electric bill. I, for one, am confident that the free market will sort out this "give me a Nissan Versa or I'll let you freeze to death" issue.

Or, or, arguing against banning AR15s and other large guns because of the rarity of mass shootings we have in the US. Because of you know, capitalism.
But I digress.
I don’t know what winterization means honestly, but it is an event that happens ones every few decades or so. And I have lived in a Red State long enough to know that these rich ass billionaires who run the oil companies don’t give a **** about anyone but their portfolios. So unless the government makes them winterize it, it’s not gonna happen due to simple suggestion. And we all know that the government is lined with pockets of other peoples money.
I just live in reality and know that life ain’t fair, and that dinguses with money will prevail. However, I continue to complain and bitch about it all the time.

But really, has anyone noticed that we have not had a mass shooting in a very long time? As in probably since Corona began.
