Hi, Im an IMG, keenly interested in Neuro residency... I would be on F1 in US soon, and would have some time to get involved in some kind of research in my university....
could somebody suggest, what kind of research work would benefit??? clinical research in neurology or basic research in neuroscience dept is better????

also, being an IMG i would also be applying to many internal medicine programs to be on safe side.... would research publications in neurology be absolutely useless for an internal medicine application??

You should really do the kind of research in which you are most interested. If you have some bench research background, then you may be able to hit the ground running in a neuroscience lab. Conversely, if you are more suited to a clinical environment, then write some case reports or even get in on a small study.

The bottom line is that if you spend all your time trying to strategize and position yourself for the best possible resume-builders, then you are doing yourself a great disservice. You are going to do a better job and be better motivated in a research environment that you find enjoyable.

Regarding neurology research on an internal medicine application, there is no way anyone would find this 'worthless'. The fact that you are doing research at all communicates your interests and motivation, and if you were doing research that you found interesting, how can anyone find fault with that? Your LOR from a neuro preceptor may not carry as much weight with them as it would if it came from a eminent cardiologist, but so what?
