when to lease step 2 score?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dr. TLM on aunt minnie would say to release it. I agree that it won't really help you, but I would be stunned if it hurt you in any way. The only way I can see not releasing it being a problem is if one of your programs doesn't offer interviews until they have all your scores.

Can we choose to never release it until after the match?

Yeah I'm planning to release it once the ROL deadlines are in. There are people who don't take until Jan or Feb, I know a good number of us are only taking it now because of institutional requirements.

So does that mean your scores will be released after ranking since we are taking it late? Deciding to reschedule and do it at the end of Jan, or early feb.

AFTER unless I somehow cracked 260

A 240 on step 2 is not a bad score, I would go as far as say its a good score. If that's what you're worried about. Releasing it doesn't matter, it probably won't help, but it definitely wouldn't count against you. No one really cares about step 2. I didn't release mine, and only got asked once what ir was.

I think Step 2 matters if you jump or drop a significant amount. We're talking 20 points either way.

This is anecdotal but I got rejected by USC, UCD, and UCI. I got my Step 2 score back the following week with a 31 point jump from my Step 1 and ended up getting invites from UCLA and UCSD. Was my Step score the reason for the invites? Maybe/Maybe not, but its the only thing that changed from one week to the next.

Basically if you drop by 20 points hold it, if you increase by 20 points release it, if you are within 20 points no one will care.

I think a more correct statement is that no one really cares about a minimal difference. I had a huge improvement on step 2 and I was directly complimented on it at multiple interviews. I strongly believe it had SOMETHING to do with my many of my invites.

I am a current MS3. im thinking about taking step 2 in nov 2012 (right before thanksgiving maybe). I guess that would mean that I would get my score around mid december. if i happen to increase significantly, would releasing in mid Dec have a chance of helping me out for interviews or would that be too late already? thanks!!

I think you should take it earlier. MSPE release next year is around Oct 1, so I would take it sometime in august if possible such that your score comes out right after you submit eras, that way it doesn't autoreport it. Then you can report it if you want, or don't if you don't want to. You probably want it to count for interview selection if you are going to release it, by mid dec, all of the interviews are given out for the most part.

hmm.. damn. august is definitely off limits. my plan for 4th yr was something like this so far:

Jul-12 Sub-I
Aug-12 vacation
Sep-12 abd rad/neuro rad
Oct-12 gastro
Nov-12 interview/Step 2CK
Dec-12 interview/ Step 2CS
Jan-13 interview/research
Feb-13 Crit Care
Mar-13 Derm
Apr-13 vacation
May-13 vacation

I guess I can do gastro in the spring and take it in Oct/Nov....

Why don't you push back your vacation further into 4th year? The first couple months of 4th year are going to be at a serious premium with mspe release being pushed up to oct 1. If you're not going to take step 2ck early enough to make a difference for getting interviews (and I'd say taking it in oct isn't early enough) than you might as well take it at the end of m4 or at least after interviews. Why are you doing your sub-I so early? At our school they wouldnt let anyone who wasn't doing medicine do it that early.
