Hi, I’ve been thinking about the adversity essay and was looking for opinions about which is a better topic to write about.

1. Talking about the death of a patient as a hospice volunteer.

Or

2. When I was younger we moved to France and I had to learn how to speak French. But I’m more inclined to talk about living abroad for the diversity essay.

Adversity & Diversity, 2 very different topics

It always depends on how well you write. What makes the death of the patient an adversity? If not written well, it can go south really really fast. Same for moving to France. There might have been adversity if you were migrating from North Africa, for example. The language and cultural differences. The poverty. The bullying. If you wrote that your dad was the US ambassador to France, that probably won't be a compelling diversity essay about moving to France, having to decide which wine to go with brie.

It really depends what you say about the death of your patient in the adversity essay. since you were a hospice volunteer, you clearly had to deal with end-of-life. And that is challenging.

I can also see living abroad and learning a new language and culture to be a challenge, but it can also, as was pointed out, be a sign of privilege.

It depends on the specifics.

What do you mean by "adversity essay?" Are you referring to the somewhat generic "talk about a challenge you faced" essay?

The adversity topics are usually optional essays meant for larger scale things that affected your overall upbringing.
