At my old hospital all doctors, NPs, PAs, etc had to undergo obesity sensitivity training. They basically told us all that when we see an obese patient we are biased and therefore treat them differently. Apparently this was because obese patients were getting offended when we spoke with them about their obesity and how it was affecting their health. So we were basically told to tap dance around it to protect the patient's feelings.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Shame on your hospital administrators (and for the physicians who supported this tip-toeing).

I tell patients their size and weight increase their risks under anesthesia. That their risk could be lower if they lost weight. Matter of fact and to the point.

Do we tap-dance around smokers? Alcoholics? Drug addicts? They all need to know that these issues, including obesity affect their health (and their anesthesia care) - in fact, we're now required to have the anti-smoking screening/discussion with every patient. Yeah, they most likely already know it - but sometimes negative reinforcement is a good thing.

Sad because the (fake) midwife did the right thing the first time. Odd that the same scenario would come up again (though even riskier with it being a VBAC) and she would go the other direction. I'm guessing the parents didn't have a "10/10, would recommend again" experience in the hospital, and badgered her a little harder the second time, or the (fake) midwife got a little cockier in the intervening couple years, or the Benjamins finally won out.

Yes, I know. It was the dumbest thing I’ve seen in 30 something years and didn’t change anything about the way I pre op obese people.
I’ll give you one guess what the background was of individual whose baby this training was.....
We still had to tell them the risks, but we were given strategies to soften the blow. Ridiculous

Oh gods, more of this ultraliberal feelings (over facts) BS. "You hurt my feelings! Now I will have to eat twice as much to calm myself."

Anybody surprised of this, in the (only) land of "fat is beautiful"? This is how one gets Trump voters.

Sometimes??? Always. Keep fat-shaming people and they will start losing weight. Keep telling them that fat is beautiful and they will do exactly as smokers did when everybody thought smoking was cool.

@Man o War,
“I’ll give you one guess what the background was of individual whose baby this training was.....”

It’s early. My English not good. Please explain above sentence. You mean “idea” not “baby”?

And is the answer “an obese nurse”?

@chocomorsel yes ma’am- shocker eh?
I meant baby, figure of speech. This woman spent so much time on the project it was like a baby.

I think what gets missed in this discussion is whether the government has any say in how pregnancy and child birth are conducted.

In a legal sense, the death of the fetus in the birth canal (10 minutes of hypoxia while stuck) is strikingly similar to partial birth abortion (death of fetus while head is still in mother's birth canal).

Can the "midwife" be prosecuted for child abuse if the fetus dies (in a brain death sense) and never becomes a child? Can this be considered a missed abortion but survival of the fetus? This legal situation came up with the governor of Virginia.

Will alcoholic mothers be prosecuted for child abuse if their child gets born with mental ******ation directly caused by excessive alcohol consumption?

Since the "midwife" pled non guilty, I wonder if this legal gray area will be a basis for their defense.

Ahh. It’s not 545 am anymore and my brain is working better. Your original sentence now makes perfect sense. Lol

Never offend a fat nurse right? Just keep buying them donuts. As in the other thread. Haha
