Job prospects

A few tables and figures would have made that article much more readable.

I think that these data show that there are plenty of jobs out there. Of course, maybe the people who didn't respond to the survey are the residents and fellows who are depressed because there are no jobs.

Even if you assume that the non-responders didn't get jobs, an average resident should be able to find a job without too much of a problem.

I predict that link will now be used by billions of posters to talk about salary issues. 🙄 Preemptively: Those are starting salaries, people!

The total number of residents who did not receive a job offer (+/- interview) was 16.7%

Holy $H!AT, that's high unemployment number for medicine. I thought it was in 10% range, guess its gone up.

It does say this, though: "It is important to realize that this survey is distributed in early spring and some of the respondents may not have finalized their job/fellowship plans prior to returning the survey. Therefore, it is likely that this survey underestimates the number of respondents acquiring jobs and fellowship positions."

I am guessing that 10% or lower is the more accurate figure for unemployment. Would be interesting though if they tracked those 16.7% a year after turning in the survey to see how they fared, and to also analyze other factors that might impact employment (eg, I knew one woman who was a new mother after finishing residency and only would consider part-time employment in the same city she trained in... so she was unemployed).

Would be an interesting tactic on the ASCP's part to paint a rosy picture of path employment by blaming high unemployment on stay at home moms. Maybe one day there will be a whole demographic of soccer moms who can bust out on an autopsy when their kids' coach has a coronary on the field.
