Hey guys and girls. I could use some friendly free advice.

Anybody have journal subscriptions or memberships outside of the AAN that are worth your while? I am open to include potentially valuable non-neuro stuff too, like NEJM and neuroradiology journals.

My practice group is offering to get me journals/professional memberships etc and I've only ever belonged to the AAN (with Contiuum and the green journal) and the AASM (with the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine and SLEEP).

I'm wide open to suggestions. If it helps, I like neurosurgery, stroke, neuroimaging/neuroradiology, sleep, and neuroanatomy.

I'm not looking to spend someone else's money just for the sake of spending money...so I thought I would ask what types of subscriptions everyone here has and if they thought they were worth receiving.

Any help is much appreciated.

I honestly don't get many subscriptions that I truly appreciate. I do, however, get added to many email-lists that clog my inbox with unsolicited requests and offers. Luckily, my university offers good subscription services, and I can search most journals by their homepages, which kills fewer trees and lets me feel like a technophile.

I find STROKE to be a worthwhile publication, and I think it is useful both to the general neurologist as well as the stroke/NCC population. I'm not sure if an AHA/ASA subscription automatically gets you a print copy, however. Annals of Neurology is a great journal, but I wouldn't want a print copy given their volume and broad base (but maybe that's just my preference). In my opinion, Archives of Neurology isn't that useful unless you're in Cognitive.

ANA can be fun if you have the time to go to the conference every year, but doesn't get you much if you cannot. Obviously, NCC and SCCM are not worth your time given your specialty. Given your interest in sleep, Brain and Neuron might be worth your time -- most articles won't capture your attention, but some will, and both are truly first-rate publications.

I get emails from Journal-watch neurology every week that are very helpful, but I don't remember if I pay for that or if I somehow just got on the mailing list.

DanielMD, I'm way below you but I did still stay on the American Medical Association and they send me daily emails with the most important news/updates in medicine. It's a bit much, but being in sleep, I think you'd find some of the articles useful. I know I'm out of my league here but you've helped me out before so thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

Additionally, are there podcasts floating out there other than what the AAN, Medscape, and Lancet have? I use beyondpod for Droid, so the search is limited in comparison to iTunes.
