Her abilities and problem-solving skills spoke for themselves; analytical and precise.

And if her GPA was 3.0 and her MCAT 22? You obviously didn't care enough to even ask. Because beyond a GPA/MCAT/Step 1 correlation we don't have good data saying what makes a good physician. So you have no idea if her abilities as a physician were actually reflected in her scores when she applied, because they may very well not be.

Pure meritocracy, right? Ironic considering white women are some of the strongest opponents of affirmative action when in fact they have been some of the greatest beneficiaries of the practice.

That kinda is the same issue with minorities, gays, women who vote GOP.

Were it not for “leftist activists”, they wouldn’t have freedom, ability to vote, ability to even have a bank account, maternity leave, work based insurance, 2 day weekend, abortion rights (although thats gone now), somewhat equal pay, etc etc etc.

Instead of helping the next downtrodden group up, they turn and kick them further down since more rights for someone somehow translates to less rights for them.. 🤦‍♂️

Whatever. Let’s take this back to politics. Roe v Wade was in fact the greatest gift to the Republican Party. It allowed them to pander to the right wing Christian base by passing symbolic abortion legislation at the state level, knowing full well that it would be struck down. As abortion rights were enshrined by the courts this would not galvanize the general electorate to care too much because it was unthinkable that roe would be overturned. Guess what, the Republican appointed Supreme Court got everyone to care again. This is an unmitigated disaster for right wingers like me who just want low taxes and cheap gas, and could care less what goes on in the uteruses (uterii?) of their fellow citizens. The issue has gone back to the voters and they have spoken loudly and clearly. The Christian Right is just gonna have to hold their nose and tolerate abortion, and convince the voters of that or they will continue to lose…

While everyone has to make choices as to what they are OK with when voting for a party…. Being Ok with most of Republican policies for the “benefit” of low taxes (mostly not true), and cheap gas (while wanting a “free” market) is ….🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I was operating under the confidence that she had met or exceeded the standards to all her prior education/training programs regarding standardized testing. Lowering those standards helps nobody and erodes confidence while creating suspicion.

Similarly, an individual in my gross anatomy group many decades ago was from an underserved area and part of an overt initiative. S/he was (very apparently) not equally prepared to the rest of us for what awaited (and quit soon after beginning). I do truly hope it didn't have a significant and longstanding psychological effect on her.

In short, without knowing any objective data you trusted that the system produced a good physician to care for you. And she did. And the AAMC data that I can find shows no obvious major statistical changes with admissions data based on race over the past several years.

I understand beliefs in objectivism just like I understand those who are libertarians. I just don’t find those beliefs all that applicable to the America that I live in given the one that existed before my time.

Wait so all minorities, gays and women should automatically vote democrat in your view?

Wait so all minorities, gays and women should automatically vote democrat in your view?

No… but voting for the party that is quashing your rights (women, and minorities), making it OK for you to be denied a job, and even housing (LGBT), makes it harder for you to vote (black people), that bans the teaching of the history that your people endured (all), that even denies your existence (certain aspects of LGBT)…… the list goes on.

I am a minority, but based on income, I should vote Rep, but all the other minorities suffer under them so I don’t.

As Kanye, Owens, Thomas, and ofcourse the LGBT wing of the Republican party has shown, more education is needed to explain what they really do and what their policies are going to result in.

Folks focus on gas prices and unemployment, while not caring about the safety nets that Reps keep cutting, or about taxes, but not knowing about the workings of the TCJA, about having a liveable wage, but not that Reps routinely vote against it…..

As Kanye, Owens, Thomas, and ofcourse the LGBT wing of the Republican party has shown, more education is needed to explain what they really do and what their policies are going to result in.
So anyone who is a minority, a female, or LGBTQ and votes republican just needs more education?

I would agree with this. Biden is just a regular politician while Trump is another level of self-interest to the point of danger to all of us.

I just hope Biden picks a better VP because I think there is a pretty good chance he dies in office. He’s definitely less mentally sharp than Trump despite them both being way older than I’d like.

I also am afraid he will not be able to perform in the Biden vs Trump debates in this election, leading to a loss; he did pretty well last time but I fear he’s declined significantly since then

Major donors are telling Trump not to run.

Florida trying to make a law that gov can run for POTUS without resigning.

They got what they wanted out of Trump.. 3 SC justices who promptly rolled back rights

DeSantis can make this about age.. and he is much worse since he has same policies as Trump but is a better politician so will get even more ****ty things done

So anyone who is a minority, a female, or LGBTQ who votes republican just needs more education?

Most have a vested interest… $$
Millionaires who pay less taxes under Republicans.

If a member cannot see how the Reps are bad for LGBT after YEARS of their policies then (like Thomas who said abortion wasn’t enshrined and voted against it, but didn’t say anything about his own inter-racial marriage), people just watch out for their own short term interests rather than what their children will have to live through.

If it takes a SC case to make it employers cannot fire you, and you still vote Rep, then that level of lack of…(not sure.. maybe intelligence, empathy, etc) is mind boggling to me.

Kind of like going back to an abuser..

So the GOP, in general...

1. Opposes freedom for minorities, gays, and women
2. Opposes voting for minorities, gays, and women
3. Opposes minorities, gays, and women having bank accounts
4. Opposes maternity leave
5. Opposes employer-sponsored health insurance
6. Opposes 2 day weekends
7. Opposes abortion rights (presumably all of them?)
8. Opposes "somewhat" equal pay for different people doing the same job

Whoa. That's a lot of new information to consider. I had no idea nearly half the country was against all those things (I am for them!)

I want the best and brightest mind pondering my health (care),

Can we at least acknowledge that we don’t need to be the best or the brightest in order to do a fine job of being a doctor?

Seems to me that anybody who has slightly above average intelligence, work ethic, and interpersonal skills can be a fine doctor. It means many people who never get into medical school are more than qualified to be doctors.

As the Dems skew more and more left I am less concerned about Hispanic voters longer term. Legal Hispanic voters can become GOP voters if the party reaches out to them. Conservative values are Hispanic values so Texas may just stay red a lot longer. The moderate democrats are becoming an extinct entity.
C'mon Blade, if anything it's the moderate republicans who are becoming extinct. The Cheneys and Romneys are vilified as RINOs by the Trumpcult and the ultimate irony there is that the Cult has essentially nothing in common with real, conservative Republicans - and I mean that with respect to morality, religiousness, ethics, fiscal responsibility, small government, foreign policy objectives, the list goes on and on.

And you think the GOP can reach out to Hispanics? Blade, we've been having that exact conversation for more than a decade. In fact if you dig up any of the post 2008 election "lessons learned" threads, you'll see the same magical thinking about Republicans learning from losses and expanding the tent.

And here we are. You really think the Trumpcult and its vitriolic rhetoric towards southern border immigration is ever going to reach out to Hispanics?

The old GOP maaaaybe could've reached out, ten years ago, with some principled behavior that could've drawn a bunch of socially conservative, religious Hispanics to the party. But obviously they doubled down in the other direction with Trump.

You should have a little more respect for yourself and your colleagues. If we don’t respect ourselves no one else will. Yes there are many doctors who are lazy and have lost a lot of their desire to think critically but most of us have a lot of specialized knowledge that needs constant refreshing and attention. We spend years acquiring this knowledge and no, not just anyone can do it. Would you want an average Joe taking care of you or someone who is more intelligent.

Many people with slightly above average intelligence maybe could be doctors. Some of them become CRNAs.

I think you overestimate the intelligence of the general population. You don’t need to be a genius to be a doctor but probably need an IQ of 120 to be a good one. Which is a standard deviation and a half above the mean. Which means 90% of the population does not have the aptitude.

If you then select those with a good work ethic you are looking at even a smaller percentage. Maybe not as small as those who could be theoretical physicists or mathematicians (who likely need IQ closer to 140+), but you still need rigorous intelligence standards.

An average aptitude student with a very hard work ethic will not make it as a doctor. Neither will a genius with no work ethic.

Look at their policies regarding mail-in ballots, ballot drops offs etc that affects predominantly minorities, disabled etc

Abortion - you have got to be kidding me right.
They are already trying for a nation wide ban and in process of restricting access to birth control & condoms.

The rest were examples of where the “activist leftists” actually fought for and got the rights to do so… and for the people who benefitted from them to now vote for the party who is OK with gays being fired for just being gay then that is idiotic indeed

Just like all democrats are OK with defunding the police, drag-queen story time in elementary schools, racial reparation payments and cancelling 100% of all student debt.

Oh wait, those views aren’t held by a majority of “the party” because some democrats have pushed for it and even enacted changes around these policies? Hmmm…

This is America. On TiKTok people are really asking why White women vote against their interests. The responses are interesting.

Is…. How a lot of doctors think. I worked in a very, very, Hispanic community my last job. As in damn near everyone spoke Spanish everywhere in the hospital.
And those doctors love the Republicans. It’s so weird. So classist. I expected to see Fox News in the lounge in the MidWest but not in South Texas. Makes no sense to me.

So I got in with an MCAT of 21? And GPA 3.8. So far, I am not incompetent and killing folks. And everyone here knows I am a black woman.
You know how many women and minority patients appreciate me and complain about the care they get from lots of male and non minority docs?
But go off.

You all miss the point. I am not stating that the MCAT is a measurement of how good or effective you will be as a physician. Rather, it is a test to determine who is worthy of getting a spot in medical school in the USA because those positions are limited. The current system is working just fine as Vector 2 and Southpaw point out, but is it truly fair to all the applicants? Are certain groups, historically disadvantaged, being given too many "bonus points" over the historically more qualified groups?

The SCOTUS ruling will likely add more fuel to the fire once they rule race must not be a significant aspect of admissions.

Of course an over-privileged Caucasian man is gonna think they know best about who is “worthy of getting a spot”.
Hahaha.
Classist, biased, entitlement much? I guess with all that privilege and building the fence higher instead of creating a longer table you really would not have a clue.
Jeez.

The Supreme Court is quite diverse so let’s see what they say

Blade does make a point. Promoting diversity is needed, but I do think denying the fact that the current system disadvantages white and Asian applicants for college or medical school is simply ignoring reality. I wish democrats would address it rather than simply brush over it, because I do think it angers a portion of voters.

Trump can’t but Desantis apparently can.

I don't think you can generalize his results with Hispanics in Florida to what he can expect from Hispanics in Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas. Immigrants from Cuba don't have a lot in common with immigrants from Mexico and Central America.

Also, "doing better than Donald Trump" with a minority group isn't a particularly high bar to clear.

It would be nice if middle school and high school boys stopped calling each other “fa**ot” as an insult and stopped bullying effeminate boys. Not sure how to make that happen without intervening in elementary school. Any suggestions?

You know what areas black and brown folks are disadvantaged in? Let’s see, hmm. Housing, loans, education, equal pay, medical care, police treatment, sentencing laws, to name a few.
Small price for the Caucasians to pay in losing a spot to a brown and black person with a low GPA or MCAT who can change minority patient outcomes, maybe propel some of their family out of poverty and give their kids a better education in richer school districts or private schools so that those kids can have the advantages from early childhood to get them a stellar GPA/MCAT and then meritocracy!!.

I agree, but you miss my point. Not addressing Blades concern about “fairness” alienates a large portion of the country who thinks the system has turned against white/Asian people. This is the punchline republicans are running with, even if it’s a bit of distortion of reality.

Alienates then to then vote for the Republicans? Sure I see. So how do you think Democrats should address it?

Dad's a drug addicted psychopath. Though he does express remorse if you watch the longer clips from the interview at the news website, so those little clips are not representative of the whole interaction they got on film.

I think the point is his views are in fact representative of views on homosexuality and the LGBTQ community across poor rural white America. In my opinion, growing up in rural white America, they are.

His concerns were addressed he just didn’t like the answers. Notice how Republicans have no problem with board rooms, CEOs, White House meeting rooms, etc. being dominated by white males historically. How does one ensure meritocracy there? What test are they taking and passing with flying colors sliding into their CEO position?

If one has a problem with AA and ensuring minorities have adequate access to court rooms, medical school classrooms, and board rooms across this country, I find it interesting those same people DO NOT have a problem with how this country has historically operated.

Democrats should address the problem itself (inequity for black/brown people) instead of discriminating against other groups in order to “equalize” things.

If banks are discriminating against blacks for giving out mortgages, strengthen the laws and give tools to prosecute banks that don’t comply.

If sentencing is unfair, give judges less discretion with more automatic determination based on the crime.

Etc.

It would seem that is obvious, but I guess at some point they decided it was more advantageous or easier to just pit different races against each other and pick winners/ losers in the eye of the law.

Where in the world are you getting this?

Just because I vehemently oppose AA doesn’t mean I think historical racism, slavery and oppression was okay? Who says they are ok with that? Just like I’m horrified at the treatment of Jews, Chinese migrants during western expansion and internment of Japanese citizens.

Picking certain groups to discriminate against now and ensconcing that in an actual law doesn’t “fix” those historical wrongs. It just creates another different, new form of racism.

These are the people (this guy and his son) that we are saying should have free access to as many high-powered guns as they want.

I’m Republican in many other ways, but I’m all for stronger gun control ; this country is insane on that issue.

Not talking about racism, slavery, or oppression. I’m talking about the dominance of the white male across almost all positions of power in this country, historically speaking. And it’s not a stretch to say they weren’t elevated to power by some grade they got in a class or score on a test, but more likely just by being surrounded by other white males invested in maintaining the status quo. This is undeniable. Look at the photo @vector2 posted taken just a couple years ago.

Even the study posted shows only correlation with how one performs as a medical student. Again, no correlation with how one performs as a physician which is a lot more complex to figure out. Minority communities are better served when their internist/family physician/pediatrician, etc looks like them, talks like them, and shares common cultural values. I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to say they’re more likely to see their physician.

Defund the police - makes sense
Spend more on social services rather than pee with almost unlimited power who are way too trigger happy.

Canceling student debt - if corporations can get bailout and forgiveness of PPP loans then why not?

Rest I don’t totally agree with BUT that is a lesser evil than mainstream Republican policies regarding women, minorities, gays, etc

That’s what you got from that post? Hahaha.
I got he was talking about all the White men who’ve historically been in power.
Boy you seem to have some internalized White guilt you are battling.
It’s Ok. Lol

I’m just saying that the case law/ decisions that allow schools to consider race in admisssions, which has then extended slowly to corporate hiring has been largely supported and pushed by democrats + liberals.

Opposition to AA practices is largely republican and now the law looks like it will be swinging that direction.

Pitting individuals against each other is a logical extension of these discriminatory practices, but I freely admit that is my opinion.

I’m not white but I still don’t understand his point about historical white power being a good justification for AA (as he was responding to my post about that.

Even if we should conclude that white people because of “group power” should be discriminated against as individuals due to their historical power— why would we extend that to other random skin colors, like Asians?

You got into a MD school with a 21 MCAT?

That’s the thing people don’t get. Just because my MCAT as an Asian was double that, doesn’t mean I am definitely, individually a better doctor than choco. There are always outliers that might overcome their test scores etc.

However, when you looks at GROUP statistics and realize these massive gaps in color standards are being applied across groups, it does a disservice to the profession, patients and pretty much everyone (not to mention the issue of fairness).
