What's your source? We had neighbors who owned a Porche dealership, owned a Porche (of course), and the wife told me its just not worth it due to cost of lots and lots of maintenance. Then there's Google, and reading Car Magazine and Car & Driver all seem to say Porches older than a few years were maintenance hogs.

The maintenance can be much much much more than any other car.
My experience with a handful of models and being a Pcar enthusiast has found the opposite. Perhaps you should read Excellence magazine (one of the best magazines still in print) as it is much more in tune with the brand than Car and Driver. Also, dealership=10,000 cayenne repairs which is not exactly the market segment we are referring to. They are expensive but not more expensive than same caliber cars of other makes. Point is that everyone knows someone that had a bad experience with whatever brand. Having owned for 10+ years I can't say it's been more expensive than BMW or VAG products. Honestly the older ones are less maintenance hogs because they don't have a bunch of electronic junk to go wrong. PCA discount helped a bit too.
 
I owned one for a number of years. Dealer will charge $400 for oil change and $2k for new rotors and pads but the independent shop that all the Porsche club guys use charged $150 for oil change and $700 for rotors and pads. Oil changes on newer Porsche’s are q10000 miles so service intervals are not that frequent. Dealer also charged $500 Michelin pilot sports I could get for $275 anywhere else. Like I said, dealer service dept will rob you. From my experience, the same ripoffs happen at Lexus and Chevy dealers.

$700 for all 4 pads AND rotors?? That's cheap as hell for a porsche...the rotors alone are like $130 each if you buy them online...you can't change them yourself for that cheap. Was it just front or back?
 
I always wanted a Porsche (and Ferrari testarossa), but the starting point of 90k+ for a new 911 and high part cost (even when shopping online and doing diy) are still discouraging. I hear Porsche owners saying their cars appreciate, but I don't know how much I could trust that since I as a potential buyer would frown at paying more than new purchase price despite a ton of miles added. I guess if it's an antique/museum piece, but nobody drives those regularly.

For the newer Porsche’s, only the super expensive GT models appreciate. Older aircooled 993s and 964s are collectible and have their ups and downs. A few years ago prices were ridiculous and people did make money on them. I don’t know how they are now.

In the end it is at least as much a toy/hobby as transportation. Driving/playing with one will never be as inexpensive as a Honda Civic.

It hasn’t been easy for Porsche when it comes to dependability. In the past, Porsche have been at the bottom of the league tables. In 2015, it was named the second least reliable car brand in the UK, coming just above Bentley. The study was conducted by WhatCar. WarrantyDirect analysed 37 car brands and 50,000 live insurance policies and the results showed that Porsche was not reliable at all in 2015. The 2015 Porsche Cayenne was only given 3 out of 5 for predicted reliability and the 2014 Porsche Panamera was only given 2 out of 5. This is backed up by ReliabilityIndex, who give the Cayenne a poor rating and an even poorer reliability index of 414 (the average was 118 and the lower the score the better).

In 2019, they are rated as one of the most reliable cars.

They ain't paying my bills they should worry about their own lives than what others are driving

Honda is one of the few companies that still offers cars (not just SUVs) for the masses in the United States that you can get with a manual transmission...at least for now. As much as Hondas are considered commodity transportation, there has always been a nod towards the enthusiast in a Honda. I bet you can have more fun in a manual 4 cylinder Civic than you can in whatever dull automatic Audi Awhatever litters the doctor parking lot.

All trims of Camaros still come in manual and if you really wanna strap a 650hp rocket to your ass you can get a ZL1 manual (end up spending like 60K though).

All Mustang trims can be manual too and you can up it all the way to a Shelby 350 but you'll only get a measly 526hp with that...don't love the way the new mustangs look either.

Oh, I know. I’m talking about a car any regular person who doesn’t want or need 650hp can drive. Very few “regular” cars come in manual anymore and it’s refreshing to see Honda still offer it on a commodity car like the Civic. I’m not sure what the car seat situation is in a Mustang, but you can fit one in a Civic. A manual Civic is probably more fun to drive than whatever generic $60k German crossover people are buying these days.

Edit: If only the Civic Type R didn’t look so terrible.

A few years ago I got a manual Mazda 3. That was a painful experience. Only 1 in three adjacent states...... [emoji19]

They're putting bigger and bigger engines in everything these days. Even SUVs are pushing 5 seconds 0-60. I have an X3 that claims 5.4 ... my older M3 is supposedly 4.6. Of course if I drove the X3 like my M3 it'd end up in the nearest ditch but it's fun on freeway onramps.

Manufacturers are all using light weight materiel now, and are often using turbochargers. The Subaru Ascent is even turbocharged. These were all changes made in accordance with EPA fuel economy targets.

The only problem for the EPA is drivers aren't driving conservatively, negating most of the fuel economy improvements.

If they were serious, the government would mandate performance limiters in the ECUs. But then people would either not buy them in favor of used cars, or the aftermarket mod scene would go mainstream.

I hate turbochargers. Just another thing to cause premature power train failure.

I think there's a lot of currently untapped potential with EV's. Think of all the cool stuff you can do with an independent hub motor on all 4 wheels. Increased performance and handling by directing power differently and more precisely than you can with a regular ICE all-wheel drive system. But that's just the beginning. Drivers side wheels forward, passenger side wheels in reverse and you can literally spin the car on it's axis. Tight parking lots ain't no thing any more.

yes, and if you get the right Porsche, you might even make a profit if you decide to sell it. I unexpectedly made a nice return when I sold my Porsche after a few years.

I would buy a Gimbal Helicopter far before I ever buy a sports car.

Someone who has lots of outdoor stuff to tow around, a small army of a family, and someone who doesn’t want to get hurt in accidents when some @$$hat slams into me.

I lost my last career because that happened, and I’ve been in two major accidents since. The next idiot can have a conversation with my 55lbs trailer hitch before they even hit my bumper.
 
I kind of like it, it's got interesting geometry, like the old F-117 stealth fighter.

And the price of $39k is reasonable.

Musk is pulling a fast one on everybody. If anybody really thinks that's more than a shell that he's just trying to show off to buoy Tesla's stock then I have a bridge to sell you.

$100 to pre-order a Tesla is proof enough for me. He's drumming up interest with promise of something that will just keep getting delayed like everything else he's promised.
