I said the same thing as I neared the end of my first year.

I honestly wouldn't repeat vet school now even if I had to do it to keep my license and it was free. Like, even just looking at the difference in my face from my first year ID badge pic to my 4th year class composite pic...damn. It really drains the life force from you, not a lot compares to professional school imo. So it's okay and normal to feel all the things you're feeling because it really is a sucky four year period of your life. The good news is that it really does go by fast. And then life after vet school starts going by really fast
Saaaaaaaame. Would never do it again. I’d do something else.

Baby boy has racked up yet another $500 bill at the vet today…

I’m not sure what to do with him at this point. We started on meloxicam a few weeks ago to see if that stopped any future seizures. This morning he was acting like he had a seizure so I dropped him off at the avian vet that saw him last. During the day he was acting pretty normal apparently other than one period where he was acting dull, and he reportedly didnt eat much or pass much in the way of feces which is concerning, just urates. But he was bright and alert when i picked him up (with an added anticonvulsant to him)

When i got home with him (which is an hour away) he looked like hot garbage again, and then to make things eeeeven better started throwing up seeds 🥲

Nearly packed him back up to drive another hour to the er but ultimately decided against it since he stopped puking and is alternating between sleeping and eating. If he starts to deteriorate again i will bring him but for now he is chirping and very angry that i put him in his isolation tub

UGH! This baby. That is all.

Still, he helps with my why for getting into vet school and my top choice school actually has a lab that studies avian bornavirus (which is what afflicts him) so i’m really hoping it will all tie together like i hope it well.

Welcome to rivalry week, the week my boyfriend takes football a little too seriously and believes I’m being mean by picking on him for choosing an Ohio state university.
Really not looking forward to next year when the game is in cbus. Being a non-football person on football days already sucks here 😅

update, little baby made it through the night! I was highkey worried that he would be dead when i uncovered him this morning but he seems to be doing alright. I’m going to start on his anticonvulsants tonight and hopefully he will continue to improve

I can’t afford any more vet bills from this dude 😭 but he’s cute af so it’s worth it

I could only imagine the traffic, because cbus is already too confusing. I mean if you do want to root for a bad footballs team: MSU sucks so much they are giving away free tickets.

I have never been so grateful that Minnesota’s vet campus is not near their main campus with the stadium.

Not that our football team is any good.
At OSU, they use the vet hospital parking for game parking 🙃

Would anyone else be a little annoyed if a 4th year (previous extern) was emailing you for guidance on VIRMP stuff like writing the essay, program choice, etc. but then asked your coworker for a letter of rec? Coworker is not being asked for guidance and probably spent less time with this extern than I did, but she is boarded and I'm not. I get that letters from boarded vets miiiight hold a touch more weight, but then ask her for all of the guidance, not me

Yeah. Not appropriate to me.

My immediate thought is that they don't want to overburden one person with a bunch of requests. Not to say this was a professional way to go about it in this case but when I was LOR requesting I definitley made these kinds of mental calculations.

I don't entirely disagree with preferring someone boarded in a specialty over someone who isn't, but for a rotating internship it matters significantly less imo/don't have me help you with your app but then tell me you already asked my colleague to write the letter...just weird.

I even asked my coworker if she's being asked the same questions (tbh I hate opinion shoppers in general) and she's not. She actually couldn't even recall who I was talking about despite being asked to write this person a letter, which probably doesn't bode well for this student

Okay, okay, okay. What is the running list of all the schools who use vet med parking lots for game days and which ones do not let vet med students use their own damn parking lot? And how much do these passes cost these days?
- Illinois, can use with Id
- Tennessee, cannot use, $400
- Florida,
- Ohio

Can confirm that the lots at UF affect students and the hospital staff, so if you're on call on game weekends it gets fun.

This isn't fully accurate though, because 4th years get an emergency access pass to use on game days. So do staff/faculty.

* I'm like 97% sure of this bc I recall the emails telling us how to get ours having a separate section for clinical year students, who had to pick theirs up from someone else.

Yeah I've heard that from employees who work on weekends as well! I don't think non-working/clinical students can get them though unfortunately, but better than nothing 😅

when i shadowed in path i was told i could get a special pass of some sort if i was coming in on a game day!

Washington State does not let us use our parking passes for our parking lot on game days 🙁

The cost for our parking passes varies depending on which lot you want, but for the lot outside our main buildings I think it was like $700 for the school year? Idk, I chose the cheaper lot further away lol

They actually steal all of our lots except client parking….. There’s one they use just for RVs? They charge the cars like $50 a person I think. I got called in one weekend and literally just parked in client bc idk what else they wanted me to do :/

Michigan state, can use ID to park in school staff parking on game days. To park in our actual student lot, not allowed: $480

This is all absolutely ridiculous.

ETA basically immediately: its a level of disrespect for students that are in a completely separate program that is just worthwhile as the sport. I'm not bothered by the amount of money sports get; I understand how that money flows and all that jazz.

But if they're going to take student parking from students who pay for that parking and then charge that parking for more than what the student pays per day, that money should absolutely be going to the program from which parking is being stolen from.

After all, vet students aren't granted free parking for SAVMA symposium, now are they?

Glad he's doing okay <3 bornavirus sucks

same at UT. my $400 parking pass means nothing on game day and they’re QUICK to write up a ticket.
Oof that price has gone up and the game day situation has gotten worse since I was there. Historically you could still park in the lots as long as you had a reason to be at the hospital (which of course is still annoying if you were just hoping to study or something).

I was always more annoyed by the traffic than the parking situation. They need to figure out a better way to let people bypass the road blocks, it shouldn't take an extra hour for patients to get to the ER because of a goddamn football game.

Thank you, me too. He’a really running the gamut with my emotions. Medicating him sucks because he is so vocal and screams the whole time 😭 i thought i aspirated him night and was staring at him for a good hour to make sure he wouldnt drop dead.

I’m now 2/3 for getting sickly budgies lol. Before this guy I actually had one with pbfd, and I’m definitely still traumatized from him passing last February 😅 thankfully my other boy is apparently bomb proof and perfectly happy and healthy. We love having one normal bird in this house lol

Holiday travel rant:
If there's snow in the air and dusting the road and that makes you nervous, you should drive whatever speed you feel is safe and appropriate for conditions.
However, if that speed is 30mph in a 70 with your hazards on... then maybe the left lane isn't for you.

That's all.
