Good luck to the 4th year students tomorrow on Match Day.

I second that! This is one of the most exciting times of your education (graduation being the other one).
Just found out today that I matched with Penn-Presby. Philly here I come!
As per CASPR, there were 433 applicants contending for 417 positions at 199 podiatric residency programs nationwide for the 2008 CASPR application cycle. 76% of the applicants were successfully matched to 78% of the CASPR available residency positions.

417 Postions??? Last I heard, there were over 500 positions. Did the residency transition get rid of that many spots?
does this mean that 16 people didn't get accepted to any residency??
The shortage of positions was announced to the residency directors during CRIP. Due to closure of some of the hospitals and losing spots during the residency transition through out the 2008 CASPR cycle, it ended up less positions than number of applicants at the end of the cycle. However, during the start of the 2008 CASPR cycle, there were more positions than applicants.
This should be an interesting scramble. Lastly, there are some good programs in the scramble this year.
Hypothetically, if one applies to say the ten most applied to programs for the match and are not accepted to any, are you then put basically in the scramble position trying to find the unmatched positions? Is match process similar to say college searching in that you apply to reach and safety programs?
Congrats to all, esp my fellow Schollie, PharmD/DPMP!

Some great programs on the list. Good luck to the scramble. 8 positions open at one residency....wow...
I thought that, starting in 2008, all residency programs had to extend to 36-month programs? Some of the programs on that list last for only 24.

Securing a spot is no easy task. I would suggest just be yourself. There's no formula or equation. Be hard-working and easy to work with!!! That's my biggest advice. Don't be or cause problems. Always and always try to help out during your rotations/externships. Remember these may be your attendings/co-residents next year. Also, treat everyone (eg. pt's, medical staff) like they were your mother (my advice), utmost respect. I'm not saying to bow down to everyone, but be a nice guy/girl. Grades/class ranking will get you so far, but how you act and present yourself on rotations may get your remembered. Best of luck to you students.
P.S.- For everyone out there, I did not have a spot secured before today for residency. Like I said, I tried and hoped for the best and good things do happen to people that work hard.
You really think so? I didn't have that impression at all....This should be an interesting scramble. Lastly, there are some good programs in the scramble this year.

Well I am officially a Detroit Medical Center resident! Can't wait to get started. Sleep is overrated anyway.

All I really saw that stuck out was Grant, Orlando, Inova, Scripps, CCF, StVin Charity, and Scranton... that's less than 10 real high quality spots for over 100 unmatched students. I guess that, depending on what the graduate was looking for, you could add in Kern, Jackson-South, a few Chicago ones, and other programs known to get the numbers.
Maybe it was just because of the rare surplus of good programs we saw left over last year (2007), but yesterday's 08 overflow list looked like bare bones to me. It will probably scare me into ranking 10+ programs after I interview next year.

Yes, I didn't know a whole lot about Orlando until recently, but many Barry students seem to really like it. I guess they must not have ranked very many students. I was very impressed with the FEO residents, attendings, and posters at the ACFAS meeting last month.I was really suprised that Orlando went unmatched for one spot when they only take 2???
I was suprised for us as well. I though for sure this year we would match all 4 spots. oh well.
Way to go 👍Well I am officially a Detroit Medical Center resident! Can't wait to get started. Sleep is overrated anyway.

...Is your Inova program going to scramble or just leave the one spot unfilled? A student who externed there last year told me Fairfax was pondering going to a "clerkship mandatory for consideration" policy...?
They require at least a 3 day visit before they will interview. But for the scramble they will interview without the visit.
If places like this require a 3 day visit before the interview (assume other schools do as well), is this something you have to do on your own time and how to people figure it into their schedule? I ask this because if you plan on applying to say 10 programs but only have 4-5 extern programs to check-out residencies, how do you do it all? Just seems overwhelming but then again, I'm not even in school yet and it's a long way away.

Any other 4th years out there that matched? Certainly gusty and myself are not the only ones that read this forum?
congratulations gusty!
Would you and any other students who matched, mind posting your ranking lists? Or is that too personal? I would love to see the lists.
Did you really miss jonwill that much?
I think that a lot of the 08 Barry grads matched in southern programs: Tex programs, GA, Fla... I would guess that the vast majority matched Florida, programs. That is a year after year trend; once you get a taste of the weather and scope down here, it really grows on ya...That's what I was thinking. Where did everyone match???
Well you know us student body Presidents have to stick together. 👍 By the way did anyone else see that Broadlawns has a open position listing for a second year resident? I thought that program was closed completely, but I guess they may still take a second yr resident who is looking to change programs. I just thought it was interesting. I would think that if someone did head there for the last 2yrs of their residency they would be very busy and get some pretty great #s.
Yeah, The attendings at the Lawns were with us when we pulled that up. We all had a good laugh.
With only 417 positions, I am guessing a lot (I mean a LOT) of people wont get a residency spot in 2011 then??????
